Interview with Runolution Founder Joe Mirocke
If you've read the About Us page, you'll see that our vision is to build a global running community that embraces distinctive micro brands. To do so, we're dedicated to supporting the growth of smaller running companies, from those just getting started to those that have matured without becoming the next "corporate" brand.
As part of that mission, we are continuing a series in which we can share the stories of our Uncommon innovators with you. Get to know them better, learn more about their journeys as entrepreneurs and learn how you, The Uncommon Running community, have changed their businesses for the better.
This third edition provides us the opportunity to sit down with Runolution founder Joe Mirocke to discuss his journey to found an uncommonly amazing running gifts, accessories, and apparel business. Let's hear from Joe himself.
Uncommon Runner: Joe, tell us about your background?
Joe Mirocke: Worked in the computer industry for 5 years, and then started an ad specialties business. After 6 years, I was asked if I could get medals for a race. I could. I did not get the order but subsequently, had similar requests. Got nothing, but thought, how many of these races needed medals? I looked at the Runner's World calendar and saw thousands of races. I soon had 30 customers, then 300, now thousands. I then thought, if they need medals, what else? Apparel. Others.
Uncommon Runner: What was the inspiration for Runolution?
Joe Mirocke: I have always loved running.
Uncommon Runner: What makes Runolution different from other running or fitness companies?
Joe Mirocke: Not much, but we love what we do, and I love most of my customers.
Uncommon Runner: What is/was the most challenging part of starting your business? What would you do differently next time? What advice would you give someone trying to start their business?
Joe Mirocke: Challenging? Name it. Things I can't control I guess. Differently? Not much. Advice? If you think you can do something, you probably can.
Uncommon Runner: What is the best advice you have ever received?
Joe Mirocke: From my dad."do what you believe, and WHEN you fail, get up and prove them all wrong".
Uncommon Runner: What does the future look like for Runolution?
Joe Mirocke: The sky is big for Runolution!
Uncommon Runner: Favorite spot to run or favorite race?
Joe Mirocke: When I was younger, Topanga canyon in Los Angeles.
